Gerupuk Surf Spots

There are several breaks within Gerupuk Bay,  including the most well known and very user friendly, Inside.

Inside

Known to be one of Lombok’s best surf spots, Inside (or Inside Right) is very consistent, with surfable waves on most swells and good wind protection. It’s forgiving, and mellow enough to be suitable for all levels.

Because of its popularity, there are often photographers and videographers here who you can buy footage off after, which is helpful if you want to see how you are surfing and work on improving your technique.

Best Surf Conditions

Inside is surfable year round, and is one of the most reliable options in the dry season when winds tend to be stronger and onshore. It works on any swell size, and is surfable on any tide, including low tide, as the reef underneath is covered in soft grass.

Surf Crowd Levels

For several reasons (being a great wave, it’s protection from the wind, being close to Kuta, and friendly to all levels), Inside can be very busy – particularly when three aren’t many other spots working. Despite being mainly a right-hander, Inside also breaks to the left (stays open more often when the tide isn’t low). Going left can be a great way to get waves if the right is crowded.

Do You Need Reef Boots?

Booties are not required for any of the South Lombok Breaks. However, if you simply feel a lot more comfortable wearing them if there is any chance you will touch the reef, you could wear booties at Inside when the tide is low or nearing low. That being said, due to the soft reef underneath, you won’t see many people wearing booties at this spot.

Don-Don

Up there in the best surf spots in Lombok, Don-Don is a super fun A-frame that has a steep enough take off to get onto, but not so steep that beginners & intermediates couldn’t surf it. It generates a long ride (especially on the left) and offers plenty of space for manoeuvres.

Best Surf Conditions

In terms of wind, Don Don is fairly protected, making it an option in the dry season when winds tend to be stronger and onshore. Due to it being situated furthest into the bay of all the Gerupuk surf spots, Don-Don requires a larger swell before it starts working. Although the wave works on all tides, it gets a bit shallow on a low tide, with exposed rocks at the end, so is best avoided at low tide unless you will be quickly exiting the waves rather than riding them all the way in.

Surf Crowd Levels

You will find fewer people here compared to Inside, although it is still a popular spot given its proximity to Kuta.

Do You Need Reef Boots?

Booties are not required for any of the South Lombok Breaks. However, there are rocks at the bottom, and booties could make you feel more comfortable if you plan to surf on a mid-low tide and ride the waves further in.

Outside Right

Given it’s position near the edge of the bay, Outside Right picks up more swell and get bigger than the Inside break. There are multiple takeoff points, so you can go further out back and catch the bigger sets, or get the waves from further inside. The takeoff is a bit of a drop, leading into a fast section.

Best Surf Conditions

Best when the swell is small to medium given the break sits on the outer edge of the bay. When it gets big the waves get heavy and can barrel. Best surfed on a mid-high tide, due to the sharp reef below.

Outside Right is a great spot to take advantage of uncrowded waves.

Outside Left

Also referred to as Angry Lady, this spot is exposed, and known to be shifty, hollow and fast. Often starting with a steep takeoff that can lead into a barrel section depending on the conditions. Outside Left is best suited for strong intermediate and experienced surfers.

Outside Left works best on a smaller swell given it’s exposure. Best surfed on a mid-high tide, due to the sharp reef below.

At the inside the wave closes out onto sharp reef, and it is recommended to exit the wave before this point. As long as you are doing this, booties aren’t needed, but could be worn if it will make you feel more comfortable.

Kids Point

Kids Point, or Kiddies, could be an option for when other spots are too big (it will only break on a large swell). It is also a good spot for beginners.

How to Get To Gerupuk Surf Spot

Gerupuk is a village which is about 15 minutes East from Kuta on a scooter. The ride is easy and is fully paved except for one small very bit where you come off the main roundabout and ride down a dirt track into the village.

Once you are in Gerupuk, follow the road and as soon as you turn the right hand bend and get to the road parallel to the beachfront, there will be many people waving at you asking you if you are going surfing. You can go with them and they will lead you into the first carpark (situated at Gerupuk Surf Cafe & Restaurant), and generally charge you 200,000 IDR for a boat. Sometimes if it is a less busy time, you may be able to negotiate down to 150,000 IDR. If you are a large group you may be charged higher.

It’s important to negotiate the price and the number of people BEFORE you agree with the boat owner you will go with them, as they can get upset if you try and bring more people on your boat after to lower the cost per person.

If you choose to ignore the first people waving you down and ride past them, there are several more spots after the initial car park where you will also find drivers and be able to hire boats. The prices are generally the same. If you find a driver or a guide that you like, you can get their WhatsApp number and pre-arrange rides with them. Depending where you stop, you may need to pay a small amount to park.

Once you have a boat, the driver can take you to any of the spots in Gerupuk Bay. You can even ask them to stop and check a spot, and then if it’s not working, have them take you somewhere else. You will get 2 hours of surf time.
