Ekas Bay Surf Spots

Ekas Bay is home to two well-known reef breaks,  as well as a beach break that starts working when the swell is big and the tide is lower.

Ekas Inside

Referred to as the Gentle Giant, Ekas Inside can get size, but the waves are super soft. The waves often require a strong paddle to get onto, sometimes a whitewash takeoff, and for this reason Ekas Inside is a popular spot with longboarders.

Both sides of the A-frame are surfable. The left provides a really mellow rolling wave with a good amount of face to play on. The right can be slightly steeper, and is a shorter ride, but there are usually fewer people going for it.

Best Surf Conditions

In terms of wind, Ekas is well protected given it is situated next to a cliff, making it an option in the dry season when winds tend to be stronger and onshore. This surf spot works best when there is decent sized swell. If it’s too small then the waves will be too flat to paddle onto. Ekas Inside works on any tide level.

Surf Crowd Levels

Ekas Inside enjoys lower crowd levels compared to spots which are closer to Kuta. However, due to it being a soft, beginner friendly wave (and also just a really fun ride), it does still get crowded and many surf camps go here.

Do You Need Reef Boots?

No. The waves break over a fairly deep reef, and you are unlikely to touch the bottom, even on a low tide.

Ekas Outside

For an intermediate surfer, Ekas Outside is a good spot to try your hand at surfing bigger waves. That being said, it’s a swell magnet, and if Inside is big, it will be huge at the Outside break. The waves at Ekas Outside have more power than you will find at Inside, but depending on the conditions (particularly on a pushing out tide) they can still be slow breaking and hard to paddle into.

Best Surf Conditions

In terms of wind, Ekas is well protected given it is situated next to a cliff, making it an option in the dry season when winds tend to be stronger and onshore. If Ekas Inside is small or not breaking, Ekas Outiside could be a good bet. It is more exposed and will be quite a bit bigger here. It works better on a tide coming in, as on a lowering tide there is a lot of water pushing out.

Ekas Beach

When it’s breaking, the beach can be a really fun spot to surf, and a change from many of the other Lombok breaks that require boats to get out to. Definitely worth getting in a session here if you are making a day trip out of surfing in Ekas Bay and you see it breaking.

Best Surf Conditions

This spot requires a bigger swell, and a low-med tide to break.

Surf Crowd Levels

Crowd levels are low to medium, made mainly of people who are staying in Ekas.

Do You Need Reef Boots?

No, the bottom is sand.

How to Get To Ekas Surf Spot

From Kuta there are two ways to get to Ekas:

Taking a boat from Awang:
From Kuta, take a scooter ride approximately 25 minutes to Pelabuhan Ikan, at Awang Bay. Upon arrival at the bay there will be several boat owners with whom you can negotiate a boat ride. You can get either a small boat (up to 3 people) or a large boat. Generally you will pay 100,000 IDR per person, and a minimum of 300,000 IDR for a boat, but you can try and negotiate. The boat ride take a half hour, and once you get there they let you surf for as long as you want. You may also need to pay a small amount to park.

Driving around the bay:
This is a really beautiful drive, and worth doing if you have the time and are comfortable on the scooter. It is paved except for a bit of the road as you near the beach. There is a steep dirt hill going down to the beach. The ride takes a bit over an hour to an hour and a half depending on how fast you go. On Google maps, go to Ekas Beach Residence, near Heaven on the Planet Ekas Bay. From this beach you can surf the beach break, or hire a boat to take you to the Inside or Outside breaks. It’s a short boat ride, and only costs 25,000 IDR. It is also possible to paddle to Inside from here, or from some of the other nearby beaches, but this isn’t recommended unless it’s fairly calm and you know what you are doing.
