Are Guling (also known as Air Guling) is a steeper, high-performance wave requiring a quick takeoff. For surfers looking for a bit more punch than the beginner breaks, it provides a fast peeling ride with plenty of power and is great for practicing maneuvers.

Best Surf Conditions at Are Guling
Are Guling is quite wind exposed and can crumble when the wind isn’t light. Because of this, it is a great spot to hit up early in the morning before the trade winds pick up, or during the rainy season when winds are more favorable. Are Guling works on all swell sizes and can hold a big swell remarkably well. It works best on a low-mid tide. However, on a mid-high tide, there is also a left-hander which becomes surfable and offers a hollow, fast ride.

Surf Crowd Levels
You will usually find medium crowd levels at Are Guling. The lineup generally consists of more experienced surfers than the nearby beginner-friendly breaks like Selong Belanak.
Do You Need Reef Boots?
Booties are not strictly required for any of the South Lombok breaks. However, if you prefer the peace of mind of protecting your feet from the reef, you could wear booties at Are Guling if you plan on riding the waves further in toward the shallower sections.
How to Get To Are Guling Surf Spot
Located about 15 minutes west of Kuta, you can get to Are Guling by following Google Maps to Areguling Beach Lombok. It’s a fairly easy scooter ride with a short section of dirt road at the end. Keep an eye out for wandering livestock on the road!
Once you arrive, you will need to pay a small amount (approx. 10,000 IDR) to park, and then you can hire a boat for around 25,000 IDR each way, which is the easiest way to reach the lineup. It is also possible to paddle from the shore if you’re up for some exercise.
Remote Work & Connectivity at Are Guling
Are Guling is a bit more tucked away than Kuta. While you can get a 4G signal on the beach to check emails between sets, it’s not the place for a marathon Zoom session. Most nomads surf Are Guling at dawn and then head back to the cafes in Kuta Lombok, like Milk Espresso or Bushradio, to get their deep work done for the day.
